THE MESSAGE IS LIGHT (2020)

Amid the global upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Belgian artist Tom Herck created a powerful and moving installation called "The Message is Light" (2020). This piece honors everyone affected by the pandemic, from healthcare workers and rescue teams to essential workers and those directly impacted by the virus. It also has a special personal connection for Herck, reflecting his ties to his hometown of St Truiden, Belgium.

The installation is set up at the Sint-Trudo hospital in St Truiden and features a massive chandelier that’s 6 meters wide and 4.5 meters high. It’s decorated with 33 letterboxes, each holding a candle, which brings to mind the idea of candlelit messages. Hanging 25 meters above the ground, the chandelier makes a dramatic statement.

"The Message is Light" carries deep symbolism. It represents the sense of community and support that’s emerged during these tough times. The candles on the chandelier highlight the collective effort of people from all walks of life, from doctors and nurses to delivery drivers, cashiers, and factory workers, showing how everyone has come together to help each other.

Over eight days, the installation goes through a meaningful process. For the first seven days, the chandelier is suspended as a tribute. During this time, Herck invites people to share messages of support on social media. These messages are printed out and placed in the letterboxes on the chandelier, turning it into a symbol of hope and solidarity.

On the eighth day, the candles are lit, casting a warm glow that represents the strength found in unity. The following day, the messages are taken out of the letterboxes and delivered to the staff at Sint-Trudo hospital. This step bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds, showing how important human connection is during the pandemic.

The title "The Message is Light" reflects the idea that lighting a candle has always been a way to bring hope and clarity in uncertain times. By combining this ancient symbol with modern technology, Herck highlights how universal and timeless these gestures are.

The installation also includes 33 mailboxes, which mirrors the number of vertebrae in the human spine. This symbolizes how medical professionals support and uphold society during challenging times.. and spaces between the chandelier’s rings that measure 1.5 meters, nodding to the concept of social distancing and the collective effort needed to get through the pandemic.

Ultimately, "The Message is Light" symbolizes the strength and connection of humanity. It shows how art can bring people together, offer hope, and build connections, even in the darkest times. Just like a single candle can light up a room, this installation shines as a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
